Information Retrieval - Semantic Search and NLP - Goker & Davies Editors:
This reading talks about the use of semantics in searches. It refers the major categories from the ontology perspective. These include schema-ontologies, topic-ontologies, and lexical ontologies. The schema-ontologies refer to ontologies which are close in purpose and nature to database and object-oriented schemata. The topic-ontologies refer to taxonomies which define hierarchies. Lexical-ontologies refer to lexicon with formal semantics.
Carl Grant on Information Retrieval systems in libraries:
The Orbis Cascade Alliance wrote a letter that states to Ex Libris and to Ebsco Information Services (EIS): This letter stated “We are writing to express our great concern about your failure to make EBSCO academic library content seamlessly and fully available via Ex Libris discovery services....We urge EBSCO and Ex Libris to quickly resolve this issue. Failure to do so is a disservice to your customers and the faculty, students, and researchers we serve.” This was important because it let people know that they need to do their research when purchasing a database. Libraries have to worry about what limitations are being forced on them.

Intro Blog Week 16
So, what have you learned?I have learned so much from this class. At first, everything was unbelievable confusing. I honestly didn't think I would ever understand exactly what was happening with information retrieval but as the semester went on, things started to make more sense to me. I think the biggest thing that I have learned was that indexing is not as simple as I thought it was. There is so much more involved than I ever knew. I also learned how to use command line searching. I used to avoid using it because I was so unfamiliar with it but it is not as hard as I thought it would be and it actually helps. I also learned about the different search techniques, such as using the wildcard feature and using truncation. These have cut my search times by so much.
Are you a better searcher - is this a good/important thing?
I think becoming better at something is always a good and important thing. I think becoming a better searcher is definitely beneficial. I feel more confident in my searches and I have been able to find information faster and easier than I used to be able to
How can you pass your new searching/IR knowledge on to others?
I can help others learn the same techniques that I have learned. I think everyone can benefit from learning about how the information retrieval works both inside and out.

Reading Blog: Week 15
Filter Bubbles:
- DuckDuckGo - escape your filter bubble:
I think that this alternative search engine is really cool. I do get a little annoyed with the fact that google tries guess at what I like and gives me and other people different results. Sometimes I would like to see things that are tailored specifically to me. I also don't like that it appears to remember my past searches, clicks, likes, etc.
-What Google Knows about you:
This goes along with the first reading that we had. The DuckDuckGo goes with this. Google tries to figure out what I want to see based on the things that I search for, etc. I think this is both good and bad. It is good because it should be able to give me a good amount of information that I am actually interested in. The bad is that it filters out everything else. If I am wanting to look up something that may not be anything near what I am usually looking for, then I might end up with results that don't help me at all.
Dark Web:
-Dark Web article at Wikipedia:
Before this class, the only time that I had heard about the dark web was on Criminal Minds. It was always being referred to and the technical analyst would have to search through the dark web to find information about the criminals. I realized that a lot of what goes on in the dark web isn't bad. Some bad stuff occurs on there but it is not always the case. I thought that if you needed to use the dark web, you did so because you were doing some illegal stuff. I still find it quite fascinating that there are people that can hack into things like that.

Intro Blog: Week 15
What
do you know about the deep web, the dark web - how do you see this affecting
you, if at all?
The only thing that I really know about the dark web is what I read this week. It looks like it is mostly for people to remain anonymous. I don’t think that is always a bad thing though. I used to think that it was only for illegal things but I am realizing that it’s not always the case. I do find it quite fascinating that there is this whole other part of the web that is unsearchable.

Does
it bother you that there are parts of the web that you will never know?
It does bother me a little bit that there is so much that I will never know but I think that I may be better off that way. Some of the things on the dark web are there for bad reasons. I do think that it is so interesting how people are able to access something like this. You hear about hackers doing it and it just seems like so much information that they know in order to do searches like that. I find it incredibly interesting.

Do
you think that it is important to understand what you/your patrons what you are
NOT seeing on the web as well as what you are seeing?
I think that it is important to know that there are areas of the web that you aren’t seeing but I don’t think it is all that important that you know what you aren’t seeing. There are so many things in life that we will never know and I feel like the dark web is just another thing to add on that list.
